The Gayatri Mantra is an ancient Sanskrit chant, considered the Mother of All Mantras. I run a community choir called "Soul of the World Multicultural Choir" and I have been researching the Gayatri Mantra to give them some background information when we sing it. I am fascinated by the many layers of meaning in the Sanskrit language, and how the vibrations of the syllables themselves are said to have a powerful effect on the body. Based on the many interpretations I've read and the layers of possible meaning in the words, I have come up with a couple of interpretations of my own.
1. As the light of the sun shines on the earth, in the sky,
and in the heavens, so may it shine on us.
So may it illuminate and enlighten our hearts.
2. I sing the primordial hum, the sound of the universe.
My whole self sings, and everything sings with me:
The reality, the possibility, and the dream.
Resplendent Sun,
I bask in your divine essence
So I may have the freedom to shine
My heart’s own illumination.
